Penn Volunteers

When most Penn students hear the name Frank Furness, they think of the Fisher Fine Arts Library on campus. Though some of his greatest works have been torn down over time, several still remain throughout Philadelphia. One of his more obscure structures sits on Kelly Drive: the Centennial Arch. A couple of weeks ago, several Penn HSPV students arranged a volunteer day to help Fairmount Park Trust in its conservation. They participated in cleaning the stone, clearing vegetation from the area, and applying consolidants to protect the archway from further degradation. This event along with some history of the arch was recently written about in Hidden City Philadelphia — check it out!
