Make It Work

On Project Runway this past week, the challenge was to create a fabric design inspired by your cultural heritage. While some contestants saw their heritage as a group of memories they would share with their psychiatrist, others looked to their familial traditions for inspiration. Beyond the show, I find it interesting that the idea of generating art from one’s heritage is widely accepted, but the art of maintaining existing buildings and objects is often seen as an afterthought (in terms of both funding and prominence). I find both movements valuable, but I am clearly an advocate for preserving our built environment as a means of cultural sustenance.
